Full-Service Movers vs Packing-Only Services: Which Do You Need?

Most people picture two options: do the whole move yourself, or hand everything to a moving company. There's a lot of room between those two. You can hire professionals just to pack, have them pack and load a vehicle you've arranged, or have them pack and transport while family unloads at the other end.

The right choice depends on your budget, your time, how far you're going, how much you own, and how much lifting you can safely do. Who is responsible for the goods at each stage matters just as much, and it is the part most people forget to ask about.

What a full-service move includes

A full-service move covers the physical work from start to finish. Depending on the package, it usually includes:

• Packing all household goods, with materials supplied
• Protective wrapping for furniture, appliances and fragile items
• Dismantling beds, wardrobes and other large furniture
• Loading and securing the vehicle
• Transport to the new address
• Unloading and placing items in the right rooms
• Reassembling the furniture that was dismantled

Best for: larger households, intercity moves, homes with heavy furniture or a lot of fragile items, tight deadlines, and anyone who can't or shouldn't do heavy lifting.

What packing-only includes

Packers come to your home, wrap and box everything, label the cartons, and prepare furniture for transport. Then they leave, and the rest of the move is yours to arrange.

It typically includes:

• Packing material (cartons, bubble wrap, stretch film, tape)
• Packing labour
• Labelling and a packing list
• Wrapping furniture and, if agreed, dismantling it

It usually does not include loading, transport, fuel and tolls, unloading, carrying goods into the new home, reassembly, or transit insurance for the journey you arrange yourself.

Best for: short local moves where you already have a suitable vehicle and enough people to load and unload, or where packing is the part you can't face doing yourself.

Not every company offers every combination on every route, so ask during the survey.

Who is responsible once packing is done?

Ask this before you choose packing-only. Once professionals have packed your goods and left, responsibility for the load usually passes to you. If cartons shift and crockery breaks in the back of a borrowed pickup, or a sofa gets soaked in an open vehicle, that is normally your loss, not the packer's.

Also check:

• Does any transit insurance apply when you transport the goods yourself? Usually not.
• If the movers load your vehicle, who is responsible if the load shifts?
• Does the packer accept responsibility for breakage caused by poor packing, and how would you show that?

Get the answers in writing. With full service, one company is responsible from packing to delivery, which is part of what you are paying for.

Comparing the real cost

Packing-only always looks cheaper on paper, because transport is removed from the quote. Before you decide, add up everything the self-transport side will cost:

Packing-only total = packing quote + vehicle hire + fuel and tolls + loading help + unloading help + your time off work + any second trip

Full-service total = the full quote (check it includes GST, floor charges and unloading)

For a small local move with a free vehicle and willing friends, packing-only can work out well. For a full 2BHK or larger, the gap is often smaller than expected once the self-move costs are added. Five questions to decide

1. Do I have a suitable vehicle? Enclosed or properly covered, big enough for one trip, and someone comfortable driving it.
2. Do I have enough people to lift safely? A double-door fridge or a sheesham almirah needs four people, not two.
3. How far is the move? Across Dehradun is manageable. Dehradun to Delhi with your own vehicle is a long day of driving and unloading.
4. How much is fragile or valuable? More fragile items means more risk in a self-loaded vehicle.
5. What is my time worth this week? Two days off work can cost more than the difference.

If several answers point to "no" or "not really", full service is probably the better value.

Can I hire movers for packing only and transport it myself?

Yes. Many movers can quote for packing only or packing plus loading. Ask about it during the survey. Just be clear that once the goods leave in your vehicle, the risk is usually yours.

Is packing-only much cheaper?

The quote is lower because transport and unloading are removed, but add your own vehicle, fuel, helpers and time before comparing.

Does transit insurance cover goods I transport myself?

Usually not. Transit insurance arranged through a mover normally covers goods in the mover's vehicle only. Check the terms in writing.

Which option is best for an intercity move?

Full service, in most cases. Long distances, highway driving and unloading at the far end are where self-moves get hardest.
