Trying to save on a house move by picking the lowest quote, or skimping on cartons, often costs more in the end: a broken appliance, extra charges on the day, or a second trip. The savings that last come from reducing the work itself. That means less to move, a better date, a quote that matches the real job, and no surprises at the end.

Where the money goes

1. Move less

This is the biggest saving available. Every wardrobe, cot or treadmill you sell or give away is packing material, labour and truck space you don't pay for, and it can drop you to a smaller vehicle.

• Sell large items you were going to replace anyway, such as an old fridge, a sofa that won't suit the new room, or a second bed.
• Give scrap paper, metal and old appliances to a kabadiwala.
• Donate clothes, toys and books that are still usable.

2. Choose the date carefully

Month-end, weekends and festival weeks are the busiest. A mid-month weekday gives you more choice of crew and vehicle, and in societies the service lift is easier to book. There's no fixed off-season discount, but a quiet date makes it easier to get the right-sized vehicle rather than a bigger one that happens to be free.

3. Get a survey, not a phone price

A survey prices your stairs, lift, carry distance and bulky items before the day. Without one, those turn into "extra labour" on the day, when you can't negotiate. It also stops you paying for a larger vehicle than you need.

4. Pack the easy things yourself

Clothes, linen, books, toys and soft furnishings are simple to pack and can reduce the packing labour on your quote. Use proper cartons, keep book boxes small, and label every one. Leave glassware, crockery, electronics, mirrors and furniture to the crew. Those are where poor packing turns into breakage.

5. Pay only for the services you need

Unpacking, appliance installation, storage and premium crating are useful but optional. If you're happy to unpack yourself or don't need storage, say so and get them removed from the quote. Be careful with the essentials, though: skipping dismantling of a wardrobe that won't fit through the door just moves the cost to moving day.

6. Sort out both buildings in advance

A blocked gate, a lift booked by someone else or a society that only allows moves after 10 am means the crew waits or carries further, and you pay for it. One week before, confirm:

• Permitted moving hours at both societies
• Service lift booking
• Where the truck can park, and whether neighbours need to move cars
• Any society move-in charge or refundable deposit

7. Get every charge in writing

8. Don't skip insurance on a long move to save a little

On a local move many people do without it. On an intercity or hill-route move, transit insurance costs far less than replacing one damaged appliance. Ask what cover can be arranged and how goods are valued.

The last-minute costs people forget

Even a well-priced move can come with a string of small expenses in the final week. Budget a small buffer for:

• Extra cartons and tape
• Food and water on moving day
• Society move-in or move-out charges
• Cleaning at the old home before handover, and at the new one
• A new lock cylinder for the main door
• Broadband installation and DTH transfer
• LPG connection transfer
• Your own travel if you're not riding with the goods

Most of these are avoidable or at least predictable if you list them two weeks out instead of meeting them one at a time.

What not to cut

• Carton quality. A collapsed box at the bottom of a load costs more than the box.
• Enough people. Two people carrying a double-door fridge down three floors is how walls, floors and backs get damaged.
• A legitimate company. Check the GST number, address and written quote. An unusually low price from someone you can't trace is not a saving.
