How Safe Is Car Transport by Packers and Movers? Everything You Need to Know

Handing your car to someone else for a 250 km or 2,000 km journey feels like a big risk. In practice, car transport by an established mover is a routine job, and when something does go wrong it can usually be traced to a step that was skipped: no proper condition report at pickup, poor strapping, or no transit insurance on a long route. Here is what a safe car move looks like, and what you should check at each end.

How car transport works, step by step

1. Booking and documents. You share copies of the RC, insurance and your ID, and confirm pickup and delivery addresses and dates.
2. Inspection and condition report. At pickup, the car is inspected with you present. Existing scratches, dents, chips and the odometer reading are recorded, ideally with photos, and both sides sign.
3. Loading. The car is driven or winched onto the carrier using ramps, and positioned so it can't touch other vehicles.
4. Securing. Wheel straps or chocks hold the car in place, with the handbrake on and the car in gear (or park).
5. Transit. The carrier travels the planned route. You get a consignment number for status updates.
6. Delivery and inspection. The car is unloaded and checked against the pickup report, again with you present, before you sign.

What keeps the car safe

The condition report

This one document protects you more than anything else. Without a signed record of how the car looked at pickup, any later damage claim becomes your word against theirs. Insist on it, check it before signing, and take your own dated photos of every panel, the roof, wheels and interior.

Loading and strapping

Most transit damage happens during loading, unloading or because the car shifted in transit, not on the road itself. Watch the loading if you can. Check that straps are on the wheels, not the body or suspension, and that there's clearance on all sides.

Carrier type

Open carriers are the standard choice for most hatchbacks, sedans and SUVs. Enclosed carriers add protection from dust, rain and road debris, and can be arranged on request for premium or vintage cars. We compare them in detail in open vs enclosed car transport.

Transit insurance

Your regular motor policy may not cover the car while it is being carried on a truck. Transit insurance for the vehicle can be arranged. Ask what it covers (accident, fire, theft, weather), how the car is valued, any excess, and how long you have to report damage. Get it in writing before pickup.

What can still go wrong

• Minor dust and grime on an open carrier. This is normal, and a wash fixes it.
• Stone chips on long highway runs, more likely on open carriers
• Delays from weather, fog, landslides on hill routes, or checkpost queues
• Damage at loading or unloading, which is why both inspections matter
• Missing loose items left in the car. Remove them.

None of these is common on a well-run move, but you should know what is possible and who is responsible for each.

How to prepare your car

• Wash it a day before, so scratches are visible at inspection
• Photograph every side, the roof, wheels, dashboard (with odometer) and boot
• Remove all personal belongings, documents, toll tags if you prefer, and loose accessories
• Keep fuel low, around a quarter of a tank, unless your mover advises otherwise
• Fold mirrors and retract or remove the antenna if possible
• Check the battery, tyres and for any fluid leaks, and tell the mover about any that exist
• Disable or tell the mover about the car alarm
• Hand over one key only and keep the spare

At delivery

• Inspect in daylight if you can, with the pickup report and your photos in hand
• Walk around every panel; check the roof, bumpers, wheels and underside edges
• Start the car and check the odometer, warning lights and lights
• Note any new damage on the delivery receipt before signing, and photograph it

Frequently asked questions

Is car transport by packers and movers safe?

Yes, when it includes a signed condition report, correct strapping, appropriate insurance and inspection at delivery. Most problems come from skipping one of these.

Will my car get scratched?

Dust on an open carrier is normal. Scratches and dents are uncommon on a properly loaded and strapped car, and any that do occur should be visible against the pickup report.

Can I leave things in the boot?

It's best not to. Loose items can move and cause damage, and personal belongings in the car are usually not covered by transit insurance.

Do I need transit insurance if I already have motor insurance?

Check with your insurer. Many motor policies don't cover the car while it's being carried on another vehicle, so separate transit cover is usually worth arranging for long routes.

How long does car transport take?
