How to Change Your Address After Moving House in India: Complete Checklist (2026)

After a move, the address on your documents falls out of date one record at a time. You usually find out when a bank letter goes to the old flat or a delivery fails. Most updates are now online, and doing them in the right order makes the process much easier. Update Aadhaar first, because most other organisations accept it as address proof.

Procedures and fees change, so always confirm on the official portal before you apply. The routes below were correct when this guide was updated in 2026.

Before you start: get your address proof ready

Keep scans of at least one of these in the new address:

• Registered rent agreement, or sale deed or allotment letter
• A recent electricity, water, gas or landline bill
• A bank passbook or statement showing the new address

A rent agreement is often the first document you have, so make sure it shows the full address, including flat number and PIN code.

1. Aadhaar (do this first)

Where: the myAadhaar portal (myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in), using OTP on your Aadhaar-linked mobile number, or any Aadhaar enrolment or update centre.

How: log in, choose the address update option, enter the new address exactly as it appears on your proof, upload the proof, and submit. You get a Service Request Number (SRN) to track the update.

Fee: UIDAI has periodically waived the fee for online document and address updates. Check the current position on the portal; updates at a centre carry a small fee.

Once it's done, download the updated e-Aadhaar. You'll use it as proof for most of the steps below.

2. Bank accounts

Under RBI's KYC rules, if only your address has changed, banks must let you submit the new address through non-branch channels such as net banking, the mobile app, registered email or a letter. The bank then verifies it, usually within about two months. Most banks offer an "update address" option online with Aadhaar-based verification.

Update every bank and credit card separately, as well as demat or broking accounts, mutual funds (through your fund house, registrar or KRA) and the post office if you have accounts there.

3. Voter ID

Where: the Voters' Service Portal (voters.eci.gov.in) or the Voter Helpline app.

How: fill in Form 8 for shifting of residence, whether within the same constituency or to a different one, and attach address proof. After verification, your entry moves to the new address and an updated EPIC can be issued.

4. Driving licence

Where: the Parivahan Sarathi portal (sarathi.parivahan.gov.in). Select your state and the change-of-address service.

Upload address proof, pay the fee, and submit to the licensing authority for the new address. Some states need a visit to the RTO to complete it.

5. Vehicle registration certificate (RC)

This one has legal deadlines:

• Change of address: the Motor Vehicles Act requires you to notify the registering authority of a new address within 30 days. Apply through the Parivahan Vahan portal's change-of-address service, with address proof, insurance and PUC.
• Moving to another state: if the vehicle is kept in the new state for more than 12 months, you have to apply there for a new registration mark. For that you'll generally need a No Objection Certificate from the original RTO. Road-tax rules for re-registration vary by state, so check with the new state's transport department before you move the car.

Update the address on your motor insurance policy at the same time, so a claim isn't delayed.

6. Passport

An address change on a passport is done by applying for a re-issue through Passport Seva. You get a new booklet showing the new address. Apply online, book an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra or POPSK, and take the original passport and new address proof. Police verification may be needed at the new address.

You don't have to re-issue immediately just because you moved. Many people update it at the next renewal unless they need the current address on it, for example for a visa application.

7. PAN

The address on PAN is mainly used for communication. You can update it through the PAN change or correction service on the Protean (NSDL) or UTIITSL websites. It's optional for most people, but worth doing if you receive tax correspondence by post.

8. LPG connection

• Same city, same distributor's area: ask your distributor to update the address.
• Different area or city: surrender the connection at your current distributor and collect a Termination Voucher. Give it to a distributor in the new area for a new connection without paying the full new-connection cost again. Use the voucher within its validity period.

9. Utilities and services

• Electricity and water: final meter reading and closure or transfer at the old address; new connection or name change at the new one
• Broadband and DTH: shift or close the connection (book the shift early, as slots fill)
• Mobile postpaid billing address
• Newspaper, milk and any doorstep subscriptions

10. Work, insurance and everything else

• Employer HR records, which feed your Form 16, payslips and any relocation reimbursement
• EPFO: keep your UAN profile current
• Health, life and home insurance policies
• Children's schools and transport
• Doctors and hospitals where you have records
• Online shopping, food delivery and courier accounts: delete the old address so it isn't picked by default
• DigiLocker, which will pull updated documents once the issuers update them

If you run a business

For a GST-registered business that has moved its principal place of business, file an amendment to the registration on the GST portal with proof of the new premises. This should be done within the time limit set in the GST rules (currently 15 days of the change); confirm with your accountant. Also update your Udyam registration, trade licence, bank current account and Google Business Profile.
