How to Choose Packers and Movers in Dehradun: A 2026 Checklist
Published by Agarwal Packers and Movers, Dehradun. About us

A step-by-step checklist for choosing packers and movers in Dehradun: what to verify, what a proper survey and written quote look like, insurance and payment terms, and the red flags to walk away from.
Most people hire packers and movers once every few years, so it is hard to know what a good one looks like. A low phone quote, a busy listing page or a familiar brand name tells you very little. What protects you is a short set of checks: a real address, a verifiable registration, a proper survey, a written itemised quote and clear terms for insurance and payment.
This guide walks through those checks for a move in or out of Dehradun. It does not rank companies. Use the same questions on every firm you shortlist, including us.
Step 1: Shortlist firms with a real Dehradun address
Start with three or four companies that have an office you could actually walk into. Look the address up on a map, and if the move is large, visit. A firm that only exists as a mobile number on a listing site is hard to hold to account if something goes wrong.
Local experience matters in Dehradun for practical reasons:
- Older localities such as Dalanwala and parts of Rajpur Road have narrow lanes where a full-size truck cannot reach the gate, so goods have to be carried or shuttled.
- Gated societies on Sahastradhara Road, GMS Road and in Vasant Vihar often have fixed shifting hours and service-lift bookings.
- Hill destinations such as Mussoorie need smaller vehicles for the last stretch, and monsoon weather affects packing and timing.
A mover who has worked these streets will ask about them during the survey without being prompted.
Step 2: Verify the business before you share anything
Ask every company for these details in writing and check them yourself:
- GSTIN. Search it on the official GST portal using the "Search Taxpayer" option. The legal or trade name and the state should match the company you are talking to. A Dehradun business will normally have a GSTIN starting with 05, the code for Uttarakhand.
- Physical address. It should match the address on the quotation and, later, the invoice.
- IBA approval, if your employer is paying. Many banks, PSUs and government offices ask for an IBA approved transporter when reimbursing a transfer. Ask for the certificate number and check it with your HR or accounts team before you book.
- ISO certification. Useful, not essential. If a company claims it, ask for the certificate.
Be careful with names. Many unrelated firms in India trade under similar names, including several that use "Agarwal". Check that the phone number, address and GSTIN all belong to the same business. If you want to confirm you are dealing with us, our verification page lists our registered details.
Step 3: Insist on a survey before the final price
A reliable quote needs someone to see what is being moved, either in person or on a video call. During the survey the mover should:
- Go room by room and note furniture, appliances, cartons and fragile items.
- Ask about floors, lift size and whether the lift can be used for furniture.
- Check where the truck can park at both ends and how far goods must be carried.
- Identify items that need dismantling, special packing or wooden crating.
- Confirm dates, society rules and any storage needs.
Be wary of a firm that gives a firm, low figure over the phone without seeing anything. That number usually grows on moving day.
Step 4: Compare written, itemised quotes
Ask each company for a written quote on its letterhead or by email. A useful quote separates the main costs so you can compare like with like:
| Line item | What to check |
|---|---|
| Packing and materials | Which items are packed, and what materials are used for fragile goods |
| Labour, loading and unloading | Whether floors without a lift and long carries are included |
| Transport | Vehicle size, dedicated or shared load, tolls for intercity moves |
| Dismantling and reassembly | Which furniture is included |
| Transit insurance | Premium, insurer, and what is covered |
| GST | Whether the total is inclusive or exclusive of GST |
| Extras | Waiting time, storage, appliance handling, and when they apply |
For a rough idea before anyone visits, our moving cost calculator gives an indicative range. Treat any online figure as a starting point, not a final price.
Step 5: Ask what the insurance actually covers
"Insured" can mean very different things. Ask whether transit insurance is available, which insurer issues the policy, what events it covers, how the declared value is set, and what the claim process is. Some policies cover only accidents and fire during the journey; others also cover damage during handling. Items you pack yourself are often excluded. Get the answers in writing.
Step 6: Agree payment terms that protect you
- A modest booking amount is normal. Paying the full amount long before the move is not.
- Pay by traceable methods and keep every receipt.
- Ask for a GST invoice and, for intercity moves, a consignment note (also called a GC or bilty) in the company's own name.
- Make sure anything promised on the phone or WhatsApp appears in the written quote.
Step 7: Read reviews for patterns, not stars
A star rating alone tells you little. Read recent reviews across all ratings and look for repeated, specific complaints about extra charges, damage or poor communication. Check how the company replies to criticism. A sudden burst of short, generic five-star reviews is a reason to look more closely.
On moving day
- Be present for packing and loading, or have someone you trust there.
- Check the inventory list before you sign it, and keep a copy.
- Keep cash, jewellery, documents and medicines with you, not on the truck.
- At delivery, check the inventory and open fragile cartons first. Note any damage on the delivery receipt and report it to the mover in writing straight away, with photos.
Red flags worth walking away from
- No verifiable office address or GSTIN.
- A final price given without a survey.
- A quote far below every other quote.
- Pressure to pay in full immediately or "book today".
- Vague answers about insurance, extra charges or delivery dates.
- Paperwork in a different name from the one you were given.

Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should I book packers and movers in Dehradun?
One to two weeks is usually enough for a local move. For intercity moves, or for weekends, month-ends and the summer and school-holiday period, book earlier so you can get the date and vehicle you want.
What do local moves in Dehradun cost?
As an indicative 2026 guide, a 1BHK move within Dehradun is about ₹3,000 – ₹6,000, a 2BHK ₹6,000 – ₹12,000 and a 3BHK ₹10,000 – ₹20,000. The final price depends on volume, floors, access and packing, and should be confirmed in a written quote after a survey.
Can I pack some things myself to save money?
Yes. Clothes, books and unbreakable kitchen items are easy to pack yourself. Leave fragile items, electronics and furniture to the movers, and check your insurance terms, because self-packed cartons are often excluded from cover.
What paperwork should I get from the mover?
A written itemised quote, a booking receipt, an inventory list signed at pickup, a consignment note for intercity moves, the insurance details if you take cover, and a GST invoice.
Is the cheapest quote a bad sign?
Not always, but compare what each quote includes. A much lower figure often leaves out packing materials, floor charges, GST or insurance, which then appear on moving day.
