Best Time of Year to Move House in India: A Season-by-Season Guide

There is no single best month to move house in India. Every season brings its own problem: heat in summer, rain and landslides in the monsoon, crowded calendars around festivals, and fog and snow in winter. But the choice of date matters more than most people think. It affects how easily you get the crew and vehicle you want, how many things can go wrong on the road, and how many small costs get added at the end.

This guide goes season by season, with notes for moves in and out of Dehradun. Then it covers the part that is often overlooked: the week and day you choose can matter as much as the month.

Pick the date first, then compare quotes

Most people collect quotes first and fit the date around whoever is cheapest. It works better the other way round. Many of the costs that surprise people are set by the calendar:

• Possession dates that don't line up. If you must leave the old home before the new one is ready, your goods need storage for the gap, plus an extra round of handling. Fixing the move date around confirmed possession avoids this.
• Society rules. Many societies only allow moves on certain days or hours and want a lift booking or NOC in advance. A date that falls on a society holiday or a Sunday when the office is shut can push the whole move.
• Your own packing time. Packing a 3BHK yourself can take two to three weekends. If that pushes you into a busy week, the saving may be lost. Professional packing usually takes a day, which leaves more dates open.
• Demand. Crews and vehicles are scarcest at month-end and around festivals. You have the widest choice in quiet weeks.

So start by asking "which two-week window works for possession, school, work and the weather?" and then ask movers to quote for dates inside it.

Summer: April to June

Summer is one of the busiest moving periods, because many job transfers and school changes happen between the end of one academic year and the start of the next. In the plains, including the Dehradun–Delhi highway, afternoons are hot enough to make loading slow and tiring.

• Book early, especially for late May and June dates.
• Ask for an early-morning start so heavy loading is done before midday.
• Keep medicines, cosmetics, candles and electronics out of a parked vehicle in the sun.
• Keep drinking water available for everyone working at the house.

Monsoon: July to September

Demand is usually lower in the monsoon, so you may have a wider choice of dates. The trade-off is weather. Dehradun gets heavy monsoon rain, low-lying roads can waterlog, and hill routes to Mussoorie, Rishikesh and beyond can close for a while after landslides.

• Ask what waterproofing the mover uses: plastic sheeting over cartons, covered vehicles, and wrapping on wooden furniture and mattresses.
• Keep the date flexible by a day for hill-route moves.
• Carry documents and electronics in waterproof bags.
• Open any damp cartons as soon as you arrive and let them air.

Festival season: October to November

Many families prefer to move into a new home around Navratri, Dussehra or Diwali, and property possessions often cluster in the same weeks. Crews and vehicles book up, and the days just before major festivals are the hardest to get.

• Book three to four weeks ahead if you want a specific auspicious date.
• If the date is not fixed by a muhurat, moving a week before or after the festival is usually much easier to schedule.
• Get the quote and the date in writing, since busy weeks leave little room for last-minute changes.

Winter: December to February

For physical work, winter is often the most comfortable season in north India. The issues are on the road. Dense morning fog on the plains can slow highway transit, and the Dehradun–Mussoorie road can close briefly after snow.

• For long routes, allow an extra half-day in the delivery window rather than planning a tight arrival.
• For hill moves, keep the date flexible from December to February.

The week and the day matter too

• Mid-month beats month-end. Rental agreements tend to start and end around the 1st, so the last and first few days of each month are the busiest.
• Weekdays beat weekends. Tuesday to Thursday is usually easier to book than Saturday or Sunday, and service lifts in societies are less contested.
• Morning starts beat afternoon starts. In most seasons, an early start avoids heat, rain build-up or unloading after dark.

An off-peak date does not come with a fixed discount. What it gives you is choice: the vehicle size you need, a full crew and a start time that suits you. On a busy date you may have to take whatever is left.
