Moving Between Dehradun and Delhi: First-Week Settling-In Guide

Dehradun and Delhi are only about 250–280 km apart by road, but daily life in the two cities is very different. Whether you are leaving the valley for a job in Delhi or coming home to Dehradun after years in the capital, the first week sets the tone. This guide covers planning the move itself in either direction, then what to sort out in your first week at each end.

Planning the move: Dehradun ↔ Delhi

• Timing. A loaded truck usually takes 8–12 hours on this route. If packing and loading happen on day one, delivery is typically the next morning. Agree the delivery window in writing.

Your first week in Delhi

Paperwork and address

• Keep your rent agreement, ID and address proof together, with digital copies. Landlords and societies may ask for tenant verification documents.
• Update your address with your bank, employer, insurer and online accounts. Aadhaar address updates can be done online with a valid address proof.
• Ask your LPG distributor in Dehradun about transferring or surrendering your gas connection before you leave.

Utilities

• Check who supplies electricity at your address. Delhi is served by different distribution companies in different areas, so ask your landlord which one and whether the bill is in your name.
• Confirm water supply arrangements, and whether there is a storage tank or pump to manage.
• Book internet early. Installation can take a few days.

Getting around

• Find your nearest Metro station and try your commute before your first working day. Journeys that look short on a map can take much longer at peak hours.
• Expect heavier traffic and less parking than in Dehradun. Plan on distance plus traffic plus parking, not distance alone.

Settling in

• Locate the nearest hospital, pharmacy, grocery store, ATM and local market, and save them on your phone.
• Unpack the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen first. A working home matters more than a finished one in week one.
• Give yourself time. Delhi is faster, louder and more crowded than Dehradun; most people find their routine within a few weeks.

Paperwork and utilities

• Electricity in Dehradun is supplied by UPCL (Uttarakhand Power Corporation Ltd) and piped water by Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan. Check whether connections are in your name or the landlord's.
• Update your address with your bank, employer and insurer, and on Aadhaar if needed.
• If you brought a car or bike registered in Delhi and plan to stay, ask your local RTO about re-registration. Under the Motor Vehicles Act this is generally required if a vehicle is kept in another state for more than twelve months.

Weather and the house

• Winters in Dehradun are colder and damper than in Delhi. Check that you have heaters, warm bedding and good window seals before December.
• The monsoon is heavy. Check drainage around the house, waterproof storage areas and roof leaks early.
• Many older homes have narrow lanes and limited parking. Work out where visitors and delivery vehicles can stop.

Getting around

• Autos, shared tempos, city buses and app cabs cover most of the city. A two-wheeler is the most practical option for many residents.
• Traffic builds up on Rajpur Road, Chakrata Road and around the Clock Tower and ISBT at peak hours, and on routes to Mussoorie and Sahastradhara on holiday weekends.

Settling in

• Find your nearest hospital, pharmacy, market and ATM.
• If you have children, confirm school admission paperwork early; transfer certificates and records take time.
• Enjoy the slower pace. Most people moving from Delhi notice the difference within days.
