Moving Solo for the First Time: A Complete Beginner's Guide

Your first move on your own is a bigger job than it looks. Nobody shares the packing, the costs or the decisions, and on moving day you're the only one coordinating everything. You don't have to do it all yourself, though. The best solo move is usually a split: you handle the planning, sorting and light packing, and you pay for the jobs that involve heavy lifting, fragile packing or a long drive.

Start with an honest look at what you're moving

Before deciding how much to do yourself, answer these:

• Roughly how many cartons will I have?
• Is there furniture that needs dismantling, such as a bed, wardrobe or study table?
• Are there stairs without a lift at either end?
• Can a vehicle get close to both doors?
• Do I have fragile or valuable things, such as a TV, monitor, glassware or instruments?

Build a solo budget

Three weeks before

• Pack things you don't use daily: books, off-season clothes, décor, spare kitchenware
• Label every box with room, contents and a number

Two weeks before

• Start the address-change list

One week before

Moving-day safety when you're on your own

• Don't lift heavy things alone. A fridge or almirah that "looks fine" is how backs get injured. That's the crew's job.
• Coordinate, don't carry. Your job is to check the box count, point out fragile items and confirm the destination.
• Keep valuables on you. Documents, jewellery, cash, laptop and medicines stay in your bag the whole day.
• Share your plans. Tell a friend or family member the mover's name, the vehicle details and both addresses.
• Do a last walk-through of every room, balcony and storage space before you lock up.

Sometimes a first solo move happens because a shared household is being split. That is hard, and the practical side is easier if you keep it separate from everything else. A few things help:

• Agree the list before the movers arrive. Sort items into clearly yours, clearly theirs and not yet agreed. Only the first group gets packed for your move. A moving crew can't decide who owns what and shouldn't be asked to.
• Leave disputed items where they are until there's a written agreement. Don't pack them just because they're within reach.
• Ask for your own survey and quote for your own shipment, rather than splitting one quote for the whole house. Two smaller moves don't always cost exactly half each.
• Photograph valuable items and their condition, and keep the signed inventory, quote and receipts.
• Label clearly by destination if both households are moving on the same day, for example "Home A / kitchen / 14".
